What does an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer do?

These regulatory bodies regulate Civil Aviation and provide designated aviation services with observance to the safety and security to strengthen the aviation industry in their respective states. But, all these regulatory authorities are implementing the aviation standards and following Standard operating procedure setup by International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for Aviation Operations and Trainings. For Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence all the regulatory bodies following the standards and requirements specified in ICAO Annex 1.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

The American equivalent of an AME is an aircraft maintenance technician (AMT), also known as an A&P The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is a governmental body of the United States with powers to regulate all aspects of civil aviation in that nation as well as over its surrounding international waters. Its powers include the construction and operation of airports, air traffic management, the certification of personnel and aircraft, and the protection of U.S. assets during the launch or re-entry of commercial space vehicles. European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is an agency of the European Union (EU) with responsibility for civil aviation safety. It carries out certification, regulation and standardisation and also performs investigation and monitoring. It collects and analyses safety data, drafts and advises on safety legislation and co-ordinates with similar organisations in other parts of the world. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is responsible for ensuring safety and environmental protection in air transport in Europe.

Transport Canada (French: Transports Canada) is the department within the Government of Canada responsible for developing regulations, policies and services of road, rail, marine, and air transportation in Canada. It is part of the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Communities (TIC) portfolio. Transport Canada is headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario.

Aircraft maintenance engineer (Canada)In Canada an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) is a person who is Transport Canada (TC) licensed to sign the maintenance release of certified aircraft. The applicant for an AME license must be at least 21 years of age. Aircraft Maintenance Engineers must complete a training course at a TC Approved Training Organization (ATO), which are mostly Canadian vocational colleges. There are also approved distance learning courses. A period of apprenticeship prior to writing the licensing examinations is required. Upon successful completion they are granted an AME license, which is valid for six years and may be renewed. Ames retain their recency by completing maintenance or related work. The Canadian Aviation Regulations require that once the holder’s license is more than two years old that they complete six months worth of work in the previous two years performing or supervising aircraft maintenance, act in an executive capacity in a maintenance organization, or teach or supervise the teaching of aviation maintenance at an approved training organization.

  • A1 License:- A1 license allows maintenance, repair, and solve the simple defects of an aeroplane with the jet engine.
  • A2 License:- A2 license allows maintenance, repair, and troubleshoot of the simple defects of an aeroplane with the piston engine.
  • A3 License:- A3 license certifies the maintenance, repair, and solve the simple defects of a helicopter with the jet engine.
  • A4 Helicopter Piston:- A4 license certifies the maintenance, repair, and solve the simple defects of a helicopter with the piston engine.

B1 licensed AME has to rectify & solve the issues regarding the
mechanical parts of an aircraft.

  • B1.1 License:- B1.1 licensed AME has to certify the mechanical parts of an aero plane with the jet engine. The mechanical parts can be engine, fuselage, landing gear, etc.
  • B1 2 License:- B1.2 licensed AME has to maintain, repair, and solve the issues of an aeroplane with the piston engine.
  • B1.3 License:- B1.3 license holder has to maintain, repair, and troubleshoot the issue of helicopter with the jet engine.
  • B1.4 License:- B1.4 license holder has to maintain, repair, and solve the problems occurs in a helicopter with the piston engine.

B2 license:- B2 license commonly known as “avionics”. This license holder allows to maintain, repair, and troubleshooting the issues related to the electronic parts of an aircraft.

How to become Aircraft Maintenance Engineer?

(a) The applicant shall not be less than 16 years of age and physically fit. (b) The applicant shall have passed 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from a recognized Board (c) An applicant who passed their 3 years AICTE approved diploma in Aeronautical, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics engineering.

How can I get an Admission in AME?

For the admission in AME colleges in India and abroad, there is the procedure that student can follow: Students can first fulfill the eligibility criteria for the AME course. There is a direct Admission criterion. According to DGCA (Ministry of Civil Aviation) candidates can take direct admission to any organization which is approved for the AME training course. So, there is no need for any entrance examination.

Is there any Entrance Examination for AME Course?

No, there is no need to appear for any entrance exams. Moreover, DGCA (Ministry of Civil Aviation) who is the whole sole authority of Aviation in India doesn’t conduct any Entrance exam for the AME course.

Is there any Common Entrance Test(CET) to take admission for AME course in India?

No, there is no such exam for AME Course. According to DGCA you can directly join any organisation.
