What is an Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

Aircraft maintenance engineering is a field that deals with Aircraft maintenance engineering are a field that deals with the repair overhaul maintenance, testing of aircraft of airplanes, spacecraft, and jet airplanes. An aircraft maintenance engineer makes sure everything running these vehicles and facilities is up to standard and in good working order according to the laws governing aviation and planetary vehicles for land, sea, or in the skies. The license is widespread internationally and is recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) according to the rules and standards specified in ICAO Annex 1. The American FAA recognizes the qualification in foreign countries but refers to it as Aviation Maintenance Engineer rather than Aircraft. In AME, students get the knowledge related to developing, designing, and repairing aircraft, spacecraft, jet planes, etc.

Future Scope of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

Indian aviation is making a splash around the world, resulting in India being the third largest aviation industry. Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) has a very good future in India and abroad as well. The job of aircraft maintenance engineers demands much more than skill and training. The job requires a great sense of responsibility and logical thinking. Airlines across the globe are continuously expanding their aircraft capacity and adding more advanced new generation airplanes. This has resulted in significant demand for aircraft maintenance personnel. And this demand will grow further in the next 20 years. In India, Recent industry reports suggest that nearly 72,900 jobs for technicians and AMEs will be created in India across Airlines and MRO sector by 2035. The need is to equip the AMEs with skills that make them dynamic stakeholders of India’s economic future. Nearly 3,644 AMEs received Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Certificate (BAMEC) in the last few years; however, only 159 type rating AME licenses were issued. The AME trainees passing out from DGCA approved AME training institutes have to undergo practical training with Airlines/MRO organization/NSOPs as apprentices. Lack of practical training severely affects the employability of AMEs.

Job Specialization

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) scope in India is rising very rapidly. AME gives you many opportunities after completing the course.

The job specializations of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering are as follows:-

  • Electronic engineer
  • Aerodynamics, Structures and Systems Engineer
  • Mechanical engineer
  • Avionics engineer
  • Aircraft maintenance engineer

The growing demand for aircraft engineers cannot be satisfied with existing professionals working in the field. So, those who are currently attending the AME course or planning to join will enjoy a higher advantage as they will come with the newer set of skills and training that the job demands.

Hence, earning the potential of an AME is very high, and most companies offer a premium pay package. An Ame is personnel who is responsible for the release of an aircraft or a component after maintenance. Ame’s ensures that at any time in its operating life, the aircraft complies with the airworthiness requirements in force and is in a condition for safe operation. Ame does overhaul, repair, inspection, replacement, modification or defect rectification of an aircraft or component, with the exception of pre-flight inspection. In other words, The technical responsibility of any aircraft is in the hands of the AME. Before every flight, the AME conducts a thorough inspection of the aircraft and issues a certificate that the aircraft is ready to take off. He has a complete technical team for this work. No aircraft can fly without AME’s certificate of fitness. It is worth noting that about 15-20 engineers work behind an airplane. From this their need can be estimated.
